.சமீபத்தில் படித்துச் சுவைத்த Daily Mirror இல் வெளிவந்த சுவாரசியமான ஒரு ஆசிரியர் கடிதத்தை உங்களது பார்வைக்குத் தருவது முக்கியத்துவம் வாய்ந்தது. அதனை தமிழ்ப்படுத்தி இங்கு பகிர்ந்து கொள்கிறேன். மூல வடிவமும் இங்கு பதிவிடப்படுகிறது.
நாம் வாழும் தேசத்தில் பௌத்த அறங்கள் குறித்துக் கவலை கொள்ளும் இப்படியான மனிதர்கள் இருப்பது மிகுந்த நம்பிக்கை அளிக்கிறது. இப்படி பகிரங்கமாக எழுத முன் வருவதற்கு நிச்சயம் ஒரு துணிவு வேண்டும். ராஜா குருப்பு அவர்களுக்கு நிறைந்த நன்றிகள்.

அண்மைக்காலமாக மகா சங்கத்தின் சில அங்கதத்தவர்கள் குறித்து கடும் விமர்சனங்கள் வந்து கொண்டிருக்கின்றன. முன்னர் இவ்வாறான துரதிஷ்டவசமான சம்பவங்கள் பெரிதும் பத்திரிகைகளிலேயே வெளிவந்தன. இப்போது அவை தொலைக்காட்சியில் காட்டப்படுவதோடு, மக்கள் அவ்வாறான நடத்தையை தமது கையடக்கத் தொலைபேசியில் பதிவு செய்வதையும் காணக் கிடைக்கிறது. பத்திரிகைச் செய்திகளை விடவும், திரையில் காட்டப்படும் இந்தப் படங்களுக்கு, தாக்கம் விளைவிக்கும் ஆற்றல் அதிகம்.
‘வினய’ ஒழுங்கு விதிகளின்படி, பிக்குகள் எப்போதுமே பொது நடத்தைகளின்போதும் மானசீக நடத்தைகளின்போதும், அமைதியும் அடக்கமும் கொண்டவர்களாக இருக்க வேண்டும் என்ற எதிர்பார்ப்பு நிலவுகிறது. அவர்கள் எப்போது நடந்து சென்றாலும், மெதுவாகவும் கவனமாகவும் நடந்து செல்ல வேண்டும் எனவும் எதிர்பார்க்கப்படுகின்றது.
அவ்வாறு மெதுவாக நடந்து செல்லும் பிக்கு ஒருவர், சாதாரண மனிதர்களுக்கு உன்னதமான வாழ்வு முறையொன்றை முன்னெடுப்பதற்கான தூண்டுதலாகவும் உத்வேகமாகவும் அமைவார். அத்துடன், ‘உபேக்ஹா’ எனும் உள அமைதியை அல்லது வாழ்வின் ஏற்ற இறக்கங்களையும் மகிழ்ச்சிகரமானதும் துன்பம் மிக்கதுமான அனுபவங்களையும் எதிர்கொள்வதற்கான உளச் சமநிலையை வளர்த்துக் கொள்ளவும் அது வழிகாட்டும்.
பிக்குகள் வீதிகளில் தமது கைகளை வீசி நடந்து செல்வதையும், தமது வாதங்களுக்கு வலுச் சேர்க்கும் வகையில் உடல்மொழியை வெளிக்காட்டுவதையும் அடிக்கடி நாம் காண்கிறோம். அண்மையில் இடம்பெற்ற சம்பவம் ஒன்றில், ஆர்ப்பாட்டத்தை வழிநடத்தும் மதகுரு, பொலிஸ் அதிகாரிகளுடன் முட்டி மோதிக் கொண்டிருப்பதைக் தொலைக்காட்சியில் காட்டினார்கள்.
சட்டம், ஒழுங்கை அமுல்நடத்துவது பொலிஸாரின் கடமை என்பது பொது எதிர்பார்ப்பாகும் . ஒஜனநாயக நாடொன்றில், பொதுப் போக்குவரத்து வீதியில் ஆர்ப்பாட்டத்தை நடத்துவதற்கு குறிப்பிட்ட எல்லை வரை அனுமதி வழங்கப்படுவது வழக்கம். பிக்குகள் சாமான்ய மக்களுக்கு முன்மாதிரியானவர்களாக இருக்க வேண்டும் என்ற பொது எதிர்பார்ப்பு உள்ளது.
உண்மையில், மதகுருக்கள் ஆர்ப்பாட்டங்களில் அறவே பங்குபற்ற கூடாது. ஏதேனும் விடயம் தொடர்பான தங்களது பார்வைகளை, எதிர்க்
கருத்துக்களை, அல்லது ஆதரவை, ஊடகங்கள் மூலம் அவர்களால் வெளிப்படுத்த முடியும். ஆர்ப்பாட்டத்தில் பங்கு பெறும்போது அமைதியாகவும் அடக்கமாகவும் இருப்பது கடினமாக ஆகி விடும். ஆகவே, இவ்வாறான நடவடிக்கையில் இருந்து முற்றிலும் ஒதுங்கியிருப்பதே சிறந்தது.
சிலவேளை, இது போன்ற சூழ்நிலைகளில் அவர்களது கோபமும் வெறுப்பும் முகங்களில் பிரதிபலிக்கவே செய்யும். அதன்போது, ‘பிரஹ்ம விஹாரண’ விலுள்ள மேன்மை மிக்க பண்புகளும் உன்னத வாழ்வியல் கலைகளான மெத்தா, கருணா, முதித்த, உபேக்ஹா ஆகியவைதான் அவர்களது உடல் அசைவுகளில் பிரதிபலிக்க வேண்டும்.
‘வினய’ வின் பிரகாரம் வாழும் பெருந்தொகை மதகுருக்கள் உள்ளனர் என்பதே உண்மை. அவர்கள் ஒருபோதும் கோபத்தைத் தூண்டுவதில்லை. இக்கட்டான சூழலில் எப்போதும் சமநிலையான உணர்வுகளையே பிரதிபலிப்பர். இந்த வகையில் , மதிப்புக்குரிய ஞானாதிலோக தேரர், மதிப்புக்குரிய நாரத தேரர், மதிப்புக்குரிய மடிஹே பன்னசீக தேரர் ஆகியோர் மனதில் வந்து போகின்றனர்.
இந்த சந்தர்ப்பத்தில், நீதிமன்றத்தை அவமதித்த மதகுரு ஒருவருக்குத் தண்டனை வழங்கிய மாஜிஸ்திரேட் நீதிமன்ற நீதியரசர் ஒருவரின் துணிச்சலான நடவடிக்கையைப் பாராட்டியே ஆக வேண்டும்.
இந்தக் கருத்துக்கள், சில குறிப்பிட்ட பிக்குகளை அகௌரவப்படுத்த வேண்டி பதிவிடப்படவில்லை. உன்னதமான வாழ்வை முன்னெடுக்கும் சிரேஷ்ட மதகுருக்களின் முன்னுதாரணங்கள் மற்றும் வழிகாட்டலின் கீழ், இந்த மதகுருக்கள் சீர்திருத்தப்பட வேண்டும் என்ற தூய எண்ணத்தின் அடிப்படையிலேயே பதிவிடப்படுகிறது.

In recent times there has been much criticism of the conduct of some of the members of the Maha Sangha. Earlier these unfortunate incidents were mainly reported in the newspapers.
Today they are shown on Television with people recording such conduct on the cell phones. The pictures shown on the screen has a more telling effect than newspaper reports
Bhikkus are expected under their Vinaya (discipline) rules to be always calm and collected in their conduct, both physical and mental. They are expected to walk slowly and mindfully all the time and a Monk walking in such a manner is an inspiration to laymen to lead a noble life and develop a sense of equanimity (Upekkha) or balance of mind in facing the vicissitudes of life, the pleasant and unpleasant experiences.
Often we see Bhikkhus walking on the roads throwing their arms around and even gesturing to emphasize their arguments. In one recent incident a Monk leading a demonstration was seen on television grappling with Police Officers. It should be appreciated by both Monks and laymen that Police Officers are expected to enforce Law and Order and most often demonstrations on public highways are permitted up to a considerable extent as it should be in a democratic country. More so the Monks who are expected to be role models for laymen.
Actually, Monks should not be involved in public demonstration at all. They could express their views, their opposition or support for certain actions through the media. When taking part in a demonstration it is difficult to be calm and collected and so it is best for Monks to keep away from such activity altogether. Sometimes in such situations their anger and hatred are reflected on their faces whereas it is the noble qualities of Brahma Viharana, the art of noble living Metta, Karuna, Mudita, Upekkha that should be visible in their bodily actions.
Of course there a large number of Monks who live according to the Vinaya and are never provoked to anger and always maintain a sense of balance in difficult situations. In this connection, past Monks of the calibre of Ven. Gnanatiloka Thera, Ven. Narada Thera and Ven. Madihe Pannaseeha Thera came to mind.
In these circumstances the courageous action of a Magistrate’s in a Court of Law who was bold enough to reprimand a Monk for his unacceptable conduct in Court should be commended.
These comments are made not to ridicule certain Monks but with the sincere wish to encourage their reformation under the guidance and example of senior Monks who live the noble life. Letters to the Editor, DailyMirror, Published on 12 Aug 2016.
